The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, is aimed to provide free and competent Legal Services to the weaker sections of the society to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities and to organize Lok Adalats to secure that the operation of the legal system promotes justice on a basis equal opportunity.

Free Legal Aid

Free legal aid is the provision of free legal services in civil and criminal matters for those poor and marginalized people who cannot afford the services of a lawyer for the conduct of a case or a legal proceeding in any Court, Tribunal or Authority.

Lok Adalat

Lok Adalat is one of the alternative dispute redressal mechanisms, it is a forum where disputes/cases pending in the court of law or at pre-litigation stage are settled/ compromised amicably.

Pre-Institution Mediation in Commercial Courts

The Commercial Courts, Commercial Division, Commercial Appellate Division of High Courts Act, 2015, was enacted in the year 2015 with the objective of achieving speedy adjudication of Commercial Disputes.

Mediation

Mediation is one of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Methods contemplated under Section 89 of the Code of Civil Procedure enacted by the Parliament. Mediation is a process in which a neutral third party assists the disputing parties to creatively resolve their disputes without going to trial.

A neutral third party called "mediator" uses special negotiation skills and communication techniques to help litigants bridge their differences and find a solution to their dispute.

Legal Literacy Program

Karnataka State Legal Services Authority along with other District Legal Services Authorities undertakes various awareness activities in order to make people aware of their rights and about the role, activities and functioning of the legal services institutions.

Internship programmes are organised for law students to promote the role and importance of legal services activities.

Juvenile Justice Committee

An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to children alleged and found to be in conflict with law and children in need of care and protection by catering to their basic needs through proper care, protection, development, treatment, social re-integration, by adopting a child-friendly approach in the adjudiction and disposaal of matters in the best interest of children and for their rehabilitation through processes provided, and institutions and bodies established, hereinunder and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

Permanent lok Adalat

The other type of Lok Adalat is the Permanent Lok Adalat, organized under Section 22-B of The Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. Permanent Lok Adalats have been set up as permanent bodies with a Chairman and two members for providing compulsory pre-litigative mechanism for conciliation and settlement of cases relating to Public Utility Services like transport, postal, telegraph etc. Here, even if the parties fail to reach to a settlement, the Permanent Lok Adalat gets jurisdiction to decide the dispute, provided, the dispute does not relate to any offence.

Legal Assistance Centre for providing a range of legal services to
tribal, rural and remote areas with an overarching objective to translate the
legal protections into reality for the marginalized sections of the society.

High Court Legal Services Committee


The High Court Legal Services Committee (HCLSC) has been constituted under Section 8A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 for providing fee and competent Legal Services to the weaker sections of the Society in the cases which fall under the jurisdiction of Hon’ble High Court.
